Surprise Kuching launch for Swiss environmentalist's book vilifying ...

Swiss human rights campaigner Lukas Straumann has launched his book accusing former chief minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud of corrupt practices in Sarawak's timber trade.

The book, titled "Money Logging: On the Trail of the Asian Timber Mafia", was unveiled in Kuching at a joint launch with Australian journalist Paul Malone who presented his book, "The Peaceful People: The Penan and their Fight for the Forest".

The launch was witnessed by Sarawak PKR deputy chairman See Chee How.

"The book is about corruption happening at the highest level of government," Straumann said at the launch.

In the book, he stated that American economist David Walter Brown had estimated that between 1970 and 1999, over US$25 billion (about RM82 billion) in timber revenue was unofficially appropriated by timber concessionaires, heads of states, their proxies and clients in Sarawak and Sabah.

Straumann said at the launch that he took about four years researching for the book and still his expose was "only scratching the surface" of Taib's alleged misdeeds.

"I am only scratching the surface because I could only publish what I know and what I can prove.

"From what I heard from insiders (people working for Taib or his family) there are many nominees being used and nominees are hard to trace," he said.

His big break came in 2010 when the American accountant of Taib's younger son, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, contacted investigative journalist Clare Rewcastle "with sensitive information" and said he was ready to share it.

Rewcastle is behind the blog, Sarawak Report, which highlights corrupt practices in the state and aims to provide an alternative vision of justice, transparency and a fairer future in Sarawak.

Straumann then was already working with Rewcastle, a former BBC journalist, "to expose the crimes of Taib and his entourage".

He said the accountant, Ross Boyert, provided them with documents linking Taib and his family to multi-million dollar properties in the US.

Four months after his meeting with Boyert in Los Angeles, Straumann said the American was dead.

He had killed himself.

"I hope the book will have an impact (with the people of Sarawak) because I believe in the power of written words and the power of history," he said.

"Maybe it could trigger some more research and encourage people to come out and say, 'Yes what we see here is unjust, unfair and it shouldn't go on'."

The book, sold at RM105 a copy, is only available from November 3 by mail order.

Straumann had initially planned to launch his 300-page paperback on November 3 in Japan on the occasion of the 50th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) in the city of Yokohama.

Straumann, who is also the executive director of the Swiss forest conservancy group the Bruno Manser Fund, will also be presenting his book in Ottawa and Vancouver in Canada, San Francisco and Washington DC in the United States, London, Brussels in Belgium, and Basel and Geneva in his home country.

He said the cities were where Taib, who is now Sarawak's Yang DiPertua Negeri, and his family had reinvested their alleged illicit proceeds from the state's timber trade.

KUCHING: 34-year-old veteran Lee Hyun Il from South Korea will lead the charge in the men's singles main draw in the coming Maybank Kuching International Badminton Challenge at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya from Nov 11-16.

The world number 60 player is expected to face stiff challenges from other contenders including Tan Chun Seang and Zulkifli Zulfadli both of Malaysia, and Phetpradab Khosit from Thailand.

Tan is currently ranked number 70 in the world while Zulkifli and Phetpradab are number 73 and 92 respectively.

Seventy-eight players are vying for the men's singles crown and they come from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Australia, Japan and United Kingdom.

47 players are accepted in the main draw while 31 have to go through the qualifying rounds.

The women's singles competition shall see 23 players already in the main draw while 16 will have to play in the qualifying round.

Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) secretary Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir yesterday anticipated that this year's event will be exciting particularly with the presence of Lee.

"We are very pleased with his participation and hopefully this will encourage other players to step up their game in light of Lee's stature as the reigning Asian Games champion," he said.

Lee was a member of the South Korea team which won the team gold medal at the 2002 and 2014 Asian Games. In the recent edition at Incheon, he was recalled from retirement and heroically clinched the deciding point to help his team upset China.

Meanwhile, former national badminton player Tan Chun Seang's best performance so far was reaching the semi-finals of the this year's Vietnam Open GP Gold Championship and in December last year, he defeated former 2009 and 2011 SEA Games champion Simon Santoso of Indonesia to reach the final of the same event.

He was the former 2012 Bulgaria Open singles and doubles champion but was the losing finalist in the 2012 Norwegian International Badminton Championship.

In 2007, Tan won the Singapore International Open and Vietnam International Open championship.

This year's Maybank Kuching International Challenge is classified as a Level IV World Tournament sanctioned by Badminton World Federation and Badminton Asia Confederation with the total prize money of US$15,000 (RM48,000).

Players all over the world are competing for valuable grand prix points offered by the six-day tournament which is being held for the third consecutive year in Kuching.

Due to limited seats, SBA is limiting the entries by issuing tickets and those interested are requested to contact the association's office at 082-579598 or 016-8938952.
