KUCHING: Nearly 600 taxi drivers in the city are putting their knowledge and customer service to test for the title of the 'Best Taxi Operator' in line with the inaugural Sarawak Tourism Taxi Competition 2014.

Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Gramong Juna launched the competition at the waterfront here yesterday.

Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) in collaboration with Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB), Sarawak Tourism Ministry and Tourism Malaysia are the organisers.

Gramong highlighted that the competition was a good move by STF as taxi drivers play an important role as frontline tourism ambassadors for the city and the state as a whole.

"Such competition has also been held in countries like Australia to promote service excellence, enhance professionalism and improve reputation of taxi operators," he said.

"Through this event also, it allows taxi operators to feel that they are part and parcel of the tourism industry, to be part of the state's growth," he added.

On future plans for the competition, he said this was only the beginning and would be held in other divisions like Sibu and Miri in the near future.

"This competition needs to be run in a more consistent pace before it can be introduced to other parts of the state," he pointed out.

However, more importantly, Gramong emphasised that the competition hopes to encourage and inspire taxi drivers to be responsible, have discipline, to gain more knowledge to promote the city and Sarawak's charms, as well as provide good customer care.

On the progress of the state tourism sector thus far, he pointed out that the tourism economy was heavily dependent on the quality of products and services which needed to be enhanced from time to time.

He was happy to note that the competition was very well received by the participating taxi associations of Kuching Division Taxi Association, Sarawak Taxi Owners Association, Bumiputera Taxi Association and Bumi Kenyalang Taxi Association.

For the competition, all taxi drivers here will be given 10 nomination and voting forms each which will be filled by foreign guests and then submitted to be judged by a panel.

They will be assessed on five criteria – drivers' knowledge and skill, courtesy and helpfulness, driver's vehicle and presentation, safety and comfort as well as service and assistance to passengers with special needs.

The month-long competition will end on Dec 8 with the Awards Presentation to be held on Dec 15.

The taxi drivers will stand to win attractive prizes including cash of RM3,000 for first place, RM2,000 (second place) and RM1,000 (third place).

Among those present was STF president cum competition chairperson Audrey Wan Ullok.

Jazilah credits Kolej Sunway Kuching for flourish in ACCA ...

Posted: 06 Nov 2014 11:30 AM PST

KUCHING: Ernst & Young Jakarta senior consultant Jazilah Firdaus is another testimony of a success story of ex-students who graduated from Kolej Sunway Kuching (KSK) and who used her professional qualification globally.

Raised in Malaysia, the Indonesian-born lass of Arab heritage was thrilled to be back in the college that gave her the career that she never dreamt of doing.

"I wanted to be a News Anchor and be in mass communication but ended up becoming an accountant. It was to be something that I will never regret," she said when met by The Borneo Post in the college yesterday.

"After finishing in Chung Hua Secondary School in Kuching, I sign up for Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and then Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA) programme at Kolej Sunway Kuching .I felt that I am at home and on the right path," she added.

Jazilah, who is here on business and holiday for the third time after leaving for Jakarta, said she started with CAT in 2007 and by 2010 had completed her ACCA exam.

She said that she never dreamt of working with an international accounting firm in the likes of Ernst & Young in Kuching as the local associates here hired local instead of foreigner.

"I was blessed with the position of Audit Associate in Ernst & Young Kuching and transferred to Jakarta two years later until now," she enthused.

"KSK had done a lot for me especially in my student days and I remembered very well we were taught on a one-to-one basis which shows that the college was committed in giving us the guidance to ensure we achieve our goals."

She said that the lecturer and CEO of the college Joseph Lim was part of a very dedicated team who wants students to excel and they proved it as due recognition came for work well done ,(in that) the college earned Platinum status as a centre for ACCA.

"I thank KSK from the bottom of my heart," she said.

The 25-year-old lass who can speak in five languages — English, Arab, Malay/Indonesia, Mandarin and Hindi — loves what she is doing now as compared to her junior job as audit assistant as she has specialised in Financial Services Risk Management, which is not "really a physically figure crunching job but one which entails analysis".

She hoped KSK will produced more accountancy graduates in the future and as a former student at KSK, "I advise those taking the professional exams to work hard and have close rapport with their lecturers".

First Cat Cafe in Kuching! : Meow Meow Cafe @ The Pet Zone

Posted: 31 Oct 2014 06:33 AM PDT

Finally there's a cat themed cafe in Kuching! Double yay from me because I love love love cat. And sometime earlier this year, my cat (B.B) went out one day and never came back. Heartbreaks and sadness ensued, and I promise myself to not get another cat anytime soon. No way. So the only way I can have contacts with cats, (this sentence makes me sound like a cat lady, I ensure you, I'm not. Or maybe I am. Whatever) is by petting a random/stray cats I saw in the street or going over to my friend's house to play with her cats. I have dogs but believe me, the affection given between dogs and cats are totally different. lol. If I explained further, you will think I'm crazy so I will not. :D I love animals what can I say! HAHA!

Yes back to the topic. This is the first cat cafe in Kuching and of course we would go there to take a look at it!

Address :

Lot 2641, Ground Floor, Jalan Green

93400, Kuching, Sarawak.

Above The Pet Zone

(Near to Celcom)

This is a small and comfy little cafe. The menu consists of finger foods and on the beverage selections, they're more to teas. There's a wide selection of teas to choose from. Cakes are also offered there.

The counter.

Cats area and human area. :)

The cats are located in the other side of the room as you can see from the pic above. There's 6 cats there if I'm not mistaken. Before going in there to play with the cats, you have to sanitize your hands, and hand sanitizer is provided at the entrance. Shoes are also not allowed in the cat area. Gotta follow the rules and regulations, it's important to keep the kitties healthy and vice versa. lol

Tea Selections

We ended up ordering a pot of tea and a slice of cake to share. The tea we ordered were called Nymph of Nile, just because of the name. XD! The name sounds so mysterious hence I wanted to see how it taste like. It's a fruity or floral tasting tea, I don't know how to explain. I'm not keen on fruity or floral tea so I'll stick with my English Breakfast Tea next time. haha! I didn't try the cake but I think it was a cheesecake and I don't like cheesecake so.... :). The cake looks beautiful though.

Cheesecake

Everything was served in a Hello Kitty themed tableware, which I gotta be honest I find a little lame. My own personal reasons of course, nothing against the cafe. First, I hate Hello Kitty and secondly, Hello Kitty is not a cat. It would be awesome if they used tablewares that actually is cat themed and not Hello Kitty themed. It would be much cuter and not as...I don't know the exact word for it...cliche? Just my personal opinion! But otherwise it's all gooood.

Nymph of Nile tea served in Hello Kitty cups and teapot. RM 7

Time to check out the cats!

The cats area are well lit with natural lighting (time for insta!) and there's a lot of toys in there for you to play with the cats. There's also a comfy sofa in there for you to lounge around and just enjoy being with the cat. If they wanna be with you that is. The cats are pretty active and oh so cute! There's 6 cats in there, if I'm not mistaken it's Bengal cats and Persian? I don't know, some fluffy cuddly cat. haha!

Living like royalties.

One of the Bengal cat.

Sho soft the fur.

Scratch scratch!

Love love love the fur patterns of the Bengal cats. They look so wild and exotic. They're definitely more active than the fluffy ones who just lounge around all the time. lol Still cute though. :D

So lazy. I like.

I have nothing to say anymore. O.o. So just take a look at the rest of the pictures below. XD. What else can I say, cat lovers will definitely like this place! Sit there and enjoy playing with the cats if they wanna 'layan' you la. HAHA!

Inside the cat area.

Cat sniffing Grace's bag. *sniff sniff*

Another view of the cat area.

The cat area is very clean and tidy. It's also air-conditioned and as you can see, there's lots of toys for the cat to play with. These cats definitely have it good. Eat, play, sleep, repeat. lol

Instructions on how to handle the cats. :)

So if you have the time, pay this little cat cafe a visit, it's definitely worth it.

Play with me?

Till next time. Have a nice day peeps!
