KUCHING: About 7,000 Christians from various denominations are expected to participate in the eighth annual Kuching Christmas Parade on Dec 6.

Organising chairperson William Ding said the event themed 'Jesus Still Cares' will cover a four kilometre route. It aims to spread the message of peace and celebrate the meaning of Christmas with the people of Kuching.

The route is from Jubilee ground – HSBC roundabout – Jalan Padungan – Jalan Abdul Rahim (waterfront) – Lebuh Temple – Lebuh Wayang – Jalan Tabuan – Jalan Ban Hock and back to Jubilee ground. All participants are to assemble at the Jubilee ground where the parade will start at 7pm, Ding said, adding that traffic flow at the routes will be affected from 7pm to 10pm, while the road near to the Jubilee ground will be restricted to traffic from 5pm to 10pm.

"We are happy that many churches are joining us in this biggest (Christian) congregation," Ding said at a press conference yesterday to announce the event organised by Kuching Methodist churches.

The churches taking part in the parade are The Blessed Church, Calvary Family Church, Good News Church, Hope Church Kuching, Christ Baptist Church, Agape Church, Grace Assembly Church, First Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, SIB Central City, Latter Rain Church, Convenant Community Church, 611 Kuching Church, SIB Olive Garden, New Life Restoration, Tabuan Jaya Anglican Church, City Harvest Fellowship, Gospel Baptist Church, Amazing Grace Church and SIB New Life Church.

Ding hoped that participants prepare gifts to be given to the public along the route as a gesture of goodwill and caring.

He said the highlights of the parade will be Christmas carolling, Christmas floats, brass bands, costume display and street performances.

Ding welcomed the public to watch the event, saying traffic police, Rela personnel and their own manpower will be deployed to direct traffic flow.
