KUCHING: The Kuching City Parade will be held annually as it has great tourism potential.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has asked Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to give him one-year notice so that he could instruct Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to work with them on the parade.

"It can become part of our tourism calendar. We want to time it near the Sarawak Regatta," he said, adding that ample notice would also give him time to include it in the budget.

Abang Johari said next year's regatta would run for about two weeks, with the dragonboat category graduating into its own event.

"This year, our dragonboat race attracted 500 paddlers from 11 countries such as Macau, Hong Kong, Canada and Australia. This means our dragonboat is considered a circuit venue for international dragonboat events."

He was speaking at the Kuching City Day Parade 2014 Prize Presentation Ceremony at MBKS Auditorium on Sunday.

Present were Abang Johari's wife Datin Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, MBKS Mayor Dato James Chan, DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, and Kuching City Day Parade 2014 organising chairman Mohamad Taufik Abdul Ghani.

Prizes were presented to the winners in five categories.

The Dance Academy (Kuching) won big after clinching the top prize for both Fancy Costume Junior and Fancy Costume categories. They took home cash totalling RM10,000.

Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak was the champion for the Cultural Troupe category, while St Teresa Marching band won the top prize for the Marching Band category. Lembaga Air Kuching sailed in to take the title of best Land Float.

The top prize for all categories was RM5,000.

Back in the Fancy Costume Junior category, Rapet Dancers won second place (RM4,000), SK St Teresa A was placed third (RM3,000), and SK St Teresa B won fourth prize (RM2,000).

Monash University, established in Melbourne in 1958, has become Australia's largest university, earning an enviable national and international reputation for research and teaching excellence in little more than 50 years.

Monash is the youngest member of the Group of Eight, the coalition of Australia's most prestigious
research-intensive universities.

For the last three years, The New York Times has published a survey in which corporate leaders (including CEOs and chairpeople) from around the world were asked to name the universities from which they prefer to recruit graduates.

For the last three years, this survey has ranked Monash University one of the top 50 in the world.

Monash led the way in the 1980s when the Australian government began to encourage higher education institutions to open doors to overseas students.

This pioneering stance brought students from across the globe. Monash welcomed foreign students, knowing that they would bring with them new ideas and fresh perspectives.

Today, Monash is the largest university in Australia and has just over 60,000 students currently enrolled with more than 22,000 who are international students.

Monash is a truly global institution and recognised not only by employers and students, but by
the most prestigious independent international judges.

The QS World University Rankings named Monash number 69 in the world overall, and rated it in the top 50 world universities in 18 disciplines.

In the most recent update (May 2014), Monash was rated sixth in the world in the field of Education, and eighth in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

For those not be quite ready to take up a university course, Monash College pathway programs are specifically designed to help students enter directly into Monash University by providing extra academic preparation.
