Kuching – Gateway to Sarawak

Kuching is only a short flight away from Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur and forms the central hub and gateway to Sarawak, the largest of the Malaysian states. Sarawak, known as the Land of the Hornbills, is situated on the island of Borneo. Home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest it offers an abundance of wildlife, which includes rare and endangered species such as the orang-utan and the hornbill. The historic capital city, Kuching, has a population of around 600,000 people and dates back hundreds of years when traders from China and the West would travel there to trade the exotic treasures of the rainforest.

In addition to the core business elements of Routes Asia our Hosts, the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, have kindly arranged a complimentary city tour along with a programme of paid tours and we recommend all delegates make time to explore the city and surrounding area.

The Tour programme includes:

Semenggoh Meet the Wild Man (Orang-utan) of The Jungle

The Semenggoh Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre is an entire facility occupying an area of 740 acres. This is the only remaining green belt near to the city of Kuching offering a sanctuary for Orang-utans. The Centre is a temporary home for displaced Orang-utans also known as "men of the jungle". On returning to the city, stop for a visit to a pottery for a close up look at nimble hands fashioning works of art. Watch the potter at his wheel and see what happens when pieces of clay is baked and then painted. This is also a good place to pick up souvenirs as a keepsake of your trip.

Located at the foothill of the legendary Mount Santubong, fronting the South China Sea, the village also called the "Living Museum" due to people living in the houses & creating their handicraft and traditional snacks.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — Rumours that two cases of the deadly Ebola virus have been detected in Kuching has set an uneasy air over the capital of Sarawak. – See more at:

According to The Borneo Post, rumours were "spreading like wildfire" that not one, but two cases of the epidemic that has claimed thousands of lives this year, may have been discovered there.

Citing an unnamed source, the news portal said that the two cases involved two African students who were admitted after seeking medical attention for cough and fever last night.

Sarawak's Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil told the news portal that rumours of Ebola were yet to be verified.

Sleepy Kuching ( Malaysian Borneo) | Our Adventure

Posted: 04 Sep 2014 05:02 PM PDT

Afte an overnight stopover in KL we've spent the last 4 days in Kuching exploring the national parks and trying to see Monkeys!

There isn't much to write about our visit to Semenggoh nature reserve apart from the advice not to go during fruit season. The orangutans don't come out to feed so there is little chance of seeing them, most guide books say the fruit season is during Nov – Jan but it's actually in August! Never mind, our visit to Boko national park proved more…fruitful!

In kuching there are many tour operators offering day trips to Boko for around 220 RM per person, but we managed to get the red number 1 bus there (3RM) entry and return boat (120RM) and return taxi for 5RM.

For the day itself we got there fairly early and were lucky to catch a plethora of wildlife within 15 mins of getting off the speed boat ride to the main park!

First we spotted the bearded pig wandering around the bins, at first it looks like they've got a tiny face but that's actually an illusion and their face is the whole head on the front!

image

Then we stopped and snapped a small family of macaques having a morning grooming session…

image

Followed by a bunch of the famous proboscis monkeys with their beaker like noses hanging out in the trees right on the main route of one of the hikes!

image

We then followed a trail to T.Paku where there was meant to be a nice beach. To be honest the hike was ok but there wasn't a great deal to see as we spent most of the time looking at the floor so we didn't trip over branches! The beach was nice because it was empty but the water wasn't too appealing so we paid 7RM each to a boatman to take us out to sea and see the sea stack along with some other rocks which looked like they had various faces built into the side.

He then dropped us off at the Pandan Kecil beach where we could hike back from an alternative route. We spent a bit of time on this beach first but had to get out of the water as we were getting stung / bitten by the tiny plankton!

It was a steep climb to get a great view at the start of our 2.6k walk back…

After that it was pretty plain sailing. We didn't see much wildlife again on the trail but did see the proboscis monkeys hanging out by the cafe! They are apparently quite shy so it was nice to catch them so close to the walkway.

Apart from Bako kuching didn't have a great deal to offer. It was meant to be high season but half the shops / restaurants were closed and there was nobody about. We asked a few shop keepers why it was this way and they didn't understand either so it beats me! We did take a little river boat which was nice but all in all I'd say we spent just the right amount of time there before moving on to Damai beach area, blog to follow…

Kuching's first ever 'Car-Free Morning' campaign draws 1,000 ...

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT

KUCHING: The first 'Car-Free Morning' here has been a success, with 1,000 people taking part.

The campaign yesterday, with the objective of reducing carbon emission (CO2) to 40 per cent by 2020, also saw various activities being held such as a 20km bicycle ride, 1.5km walk, fitness demonstration and lucky draw.

Managed by Kuala Lumpur (KL) Car Free Morning co-founder AsiaTourismAlliance.com (ATA), the event even saw one family bringing a young child to ride a bicycle with training wheels.

ATA president Kho Sze Min said he aimed to run the city's Car Free Morning on every second Sunday of the month, in collaboration with local councils and strategic partners – hoping that it could be turned into an iconic eco-tourism product.

"We should make the event a platform to forge greater collaboration in promoting Kuching as an international tourism and shopping destination," he said, adding that this city could be cross-promoted via the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Car Free Morning campaign by way of offering new extended tour packages here.

Driven by the 'Go Green' movement, ATA would be looking into new activities including morning mass fitness at Kuching Waterfront, apart from the normal cycling, jogging, walking and roller-blading that could help promote healthy lifestyle to urban dwellers especially the youths, as well as domestic and international tourists.

"All these initiatives are crucial as it will impact the country economy and eco-tourism industry," Kho said, hoping that ATA would expect the local councils, organisations, clubs, government agencies and even residents' associations to hold similar initiatives going forward.

"These activities would not only help improving our health but also strengthening family bonds and develop friendships across all ages."

The cycling and walking events were flagged off at 7am by Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also Sarawak Economic Development Corporation chairman.

Also present were Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, Tourism Malaysia domestic marketing division director Datuk Musa Yusof, KL Car Free Morning chairman Naim Mohamad as well as ATA executive vice chairman cum chief operation officer Jamilah Shukri.
