Posted on August 15, 2014, Friday KUCHING: Host Kuching broke Sarikei's domination in table tennis at the Sarawak Sports and Culture Education Service Association (PSKPP) Festival at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 school hall here yesterday. In team event final, last year's runners-up Kuching edged defending champions Sarikei 3-2 to emerge as the new champions. It was Sarikei who won the first point when William Wong beat Chung Kui Choi 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-6) in the men's singles but Ling Chooi Fong leveled for Kuching when she beat Chau Chaw Van 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6) in the women's singles. The men's doubles saw the Kuching taking a 2-1 lead after they beat Sarikei 3-1 (11-8, 1-11, 11-5, 12-10) but Kuching dropped a point in the women's doubles, losing 1-3 (13-11, 9-11, 8-11, 7-11), resulting in a 2-2 draw. In the deciding game, Liaw Soon Chung and Tsai Min Choo were up to the task to defeat Loh Leh Chiong and Lam Mee Lai 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-6) to stop Sarikei's bid of winning the championship for five times in a row. Prior to the final, Kuching had won all their games in Group B, thrashing Bintulu and PSKPP HQ 5-0, and edging Miri 3-2 to book their semi-final spot where they blanked Sibu 3-0. Sarikei topped Group A with six points after they thumped Sibu 5-0, beat Samarahan 4-1 and defeated Betong also by 4-1. In the semi-finals, Sarikei beat Bintulu 3-0. Bintulu finished third after they defeated Sibu 3-1 in the placing play-off. Other teams which participated in the competition were Samarahan, Betong and Miri. "It was a good achievement for us as we manage to stop Sarikei from winning the title for the fifth straight year," said Kuching coach Huong Haw Huon. He was pleased to see the great team work and fighting spirit of Kuching paddlers and the hard work and preparations had paid off handsomely for them. The prizes were given away by former SJK Chung Hua No. 2 headmaster Oh Boon Kheng, who is also Kuching team coordinator. Also present was organising chairman Moh Fok Choi, the headmaster of SJK Chung Hua No. 3.

What to eat at Kuching Fest 2014? There are so many choices of food, ranging from the popular one to the creative one.. so what to eat? What is the must try? This post is solely based on my personal review and opinion. Just a reference. I'll list down my top 5 to eat as well. Hehehe!  Something that you dont really get it from the normal restaurants in Kuching.. The Spanish Churros. Be alert that there is two churros outlets in Kuching Festival. But please look up for this one, it more like a spanish churros. The others, well.. its not that they are not good, they are more like crepe with icing sugar rather than churros. I prefer this one, way better. Their best seller are chocolate churros and cheese churros.  Chocolate churros dusted with some cinnamon icing sugar and dip with chocolate sauce. And the cheese one, not only the it is topped with shredded cheddar, the churros is filled with cheese sauce as well…  *weeee* served it when its still hot and the cheddar will slowly melted when you are tasting every bite of it. ^^ Durian Paradise. Everything about Durian. The durian pancake used to be my favourite few years back but now, the durian filling is getting lesser and lesser And the durian spring roll. As a durian fans, i think its nice as long as its durian related. Hehehe Pirates Rice Balls 海盗饭团 It was again, my favourite few years back. I first had it in Taiwan in the year 2010 and had it second time 2 years back in Kuching Fest 2012 and back then it was good. To my disappointment, this year the rice is overcooked and its lack of seasonings. But the ingredients and the combination is still something i love.  Long House BBQ 长屋烤肉   All sorts of BBQ stuff… and this open BBQ concept definitely draws my attention.  They had a lot of choices.. like BBQ pork, BBQ squids, BBQ cocker and so on.. For me, i had the BBQ pork. Its ok. Choconana  Fresh banana coated with chocolate and dusted with some chocolate candy. If you love banana, you will love it. I love it Amazeballs. Dear Gina, this is for you. Teehehehe! Amazeballs is actually meatballs laying on a bed of mashed potatoes and you can choose between 2 types of sauces to eat with — Mushroom sauce or the Bolognese sauce. Teochew Oyster Omelette 潮州蚝煎 Theres more than 5 or 6 stalls selling the teochew oyster omelette. I have no idea which one to pick but the boss is kind enough to help us to wipe the table after the raining day so we ordered his.  Salted Fish Bun 食炉咸鱼包 Due to the popularity of the HongKong Drama. There is a massive outbreaks of the stalls selling this salted fish bun. Which one to choose? I choose the one with the longest queue. Waited 45 minutes for this bun and my friend told me i went to the correct stall serving the better salted fish bun among the others. I was relieved. Longest queue is always the better one. Price was quite reasonable. RM 10 for 4 pieces. Flavor wise, the salted fish flavor is there, which is lacked in most of the stalls out there. Yay! Tori-11 I came here for the bacon wrapped with quail egg. But sad enough, i was told i went to the wrong stall. Theres another stall called Yakitori, just a few stalls after that which served better bacon wrapped quail egg. Oh no. I had bacon wrapped quail egg, baby octopus and grilled salmon. Lin's Taiwan Sausages 林记台湾香肠 The most traditional taiwanese sausage stalls since many many years back. I tried the original and the wasabi flavored one. Not too bad Yo Berry I told you mama never failed to conquer all the frozen yogurt stalls. And this medium size orginal flavour frozen yogurt really makes mama happy. Theres two yogurt stalls in Kuching Fest. Make sure you go to this YoBerry. I'll tell you why later. Apart from that, there are still many others which i will just show you some photos without further details. The famous Bonsai ice cream that caught every girl's heart except mine. Its just vanilla ice cream dusted with chocolate. But i guess its the outlook that makes everyone screams. It really very very very cute!  Assorted vegetables tempura.  Fried kuey Tiao Thai Desserts Takoyaki Sausages wrapped in glutinous rice 大肠包小肠 Braised parts. 卤味 Japanese Pancake Smoked Squid Before i go to my top 5 favourite list. Let me say something. I had my less impressive food in Kuching Festival. Remember i told you mama wanted to conquer all the frozen yogurt in Kuching Festival. YoBerry is the yummy one.. but dont go to the wrong one. Theres one called Yogurt Station and the grape flavoured one is really horrible. I'm dont normally ask ppl not to buy something but the grape flavoured one is really horrible. Its nothing like yogurt It tasted like ice blended + ice cream minus the creaminess. Its dead sweet and the grape flavor tasted like medicine. Its not even frozen yogurt. Sad. Or maybe the other flavors are good? But i had mine and im upset. Okay.. Shoo shooo for the bad one. Now… my personal Top 5 Ranking. My Favorite 5 in Kuching Festival 2014. Oh nom nom nom* Top 5 Must Eat in Kuching Fest 2014 5.  Pork Chop Bun Unlike the Macau pork chop bun which using baguette, here they use the normal soft bun. The bun is very soft and fluffy, pork chop is crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. i added cheese and onion sauce. Spectacular. Bad news is… forgot to take the picture of the stall. Hmmmm!  4. Bacon roll with enokitake from Barnana Its a one bite snack. Bacon grilled in perfection and when you bite it, the enokitake mushroom just explode in your mouth. The enokitake mushroom is crunchy and with the bacon wrapped, it sealed all the goodness inside, just waiting for you to bite it. 3. Durian Puff The durian + cream is just so good, served cold in the puff. The generous amount of durian stuffed in makes a durian fans like me crazy. Give me moreeeeeee! 2. Naked Fish 裸鱼 I've heard a lot of people recommending this dish and finally i have the taste of it. Definitely going to be my top 3!! The fish is charcoal grilled with only salt and nothing else. nothing else. Just the original sweetness of the fish and salt. I was hesitating at first. But it really give me the wow effect. Just simple and ordinary taste. The sweetness of the fish. The purest taste. 1. Fried Onigiri 炸饭团 Hahahahhaha! i know a lot of you must be wondering why is this my favourite dish in Kuching Festival 2014!! It is 80% similar to the one i had in Taiwan last year. It was so good. The boss recommended the ebiko flavor with cheese and mayo. The flavor just burst in my mouth. The fried Onigiri is so good, its alive! Because they added Barley in the rice balls so that the texture will not be so dead. And with the seasonings and the ebiko mayo complementing each other. I just love it. Combination wise. Fantastic! Posted on August 14, 2014, Thursday KUCHING: About 5,500 runners from around the world will converge on this city for the inaugural Kuching Marathon 2014 this August 17. The marathon is co-organised by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching Marathon Association (KMA). It will be flagged off at the Padang Merdeka early Sunday morning by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg. There are four categories in the event; namely the 42KM (full) marathon, 21KM (half) marathon, 10KM marathon and 5KM fun run. The full marathon will be flagged off at 3am, followed by half marathon at 5am, 10KM marathon at 6am and the fun run at 7am. DBKU mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the runners are not only from within the state or country but from 30 countries including Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Great Britain, Australia, United States of America, Kenya and others, who have registered their participation online. "We want the event to take off smoothly so we are looking into every aspect of safety to comply with international marathon standards. "We want to provide the best experience of Kuching to the participants and I call upon the people of Kuching to come out and support the event. We hope residents along the routes that the runners will be passing are able to wake up early and light their streets with 'lampu raya' to provide a festive and friendly atmosphere. "For those who may be inconvenienced by the closures of some roads during the event, we hope they will be able to bear with it this one time and cooperate with the officials on duty. After all, it is not every day we organise such a big-scale event," he told a press conference at his office yesterday. Abang Wahap said the event is part of the plan to make Kuching more liveable and friendly. "This event involves participation and cooperation between DBKU, KMA, the police, the army and various other agencies as well as volunteers. "There are a total of 1,200 working personnel from various agencies and 300 volunteers during the duration of the marathon," he said. Meanwhile, KMA secretary Liew Tang Chieh said runners can pick up their race packs starting today until Saturday. "The runners can collect their race packs, which will have their vests, bibs with timing devices and other goodies, from Level 3 of Plaza Merdeka anything between 11am and 6pm on Thursday and Friday and 11am to 8pm on Saturday. "For those who cannot make it on those days, they can pick up from the Drop Zone Counter at the Padang Merdeka from midnight onwards just before the marathon. For more information, the public can log on to the website www.marathonkuching.com Also present at the press conference were Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek, District Traffic and Public Order chief DSP Amihizam Abdul Syukor, Army representative Capt Dr Ahmad Tarmizi Abu Bakar and KMA president Wong Chen Yi.

Desmond Jerukan A fun run ended in a tragedy for a group of Bruneians participating in Kuching Marathon 2014 inaugural event. Abdul Aziz Japar, 54, was joining thousand of other marathoners participating in a '5KM Fun Run' category when he suddenly collapsed in the middle of the run along Jalan Muhibah. He was immediately rushed to Sarawak General Hospital by the event's emergency team. Sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital around 7am, reports The Star. The inaugural Kuching Marathon 2014 were divided into four categories – a full 42KM marathon, half marathon 21KM, 10KM marathon and 5KM fun run.
