ROUTES ASIA: Video Highlights from Kuching :: Routesonline

ROUTES ASIA: Video Highlights from Kuching

This year's Routes Asia took place under the shadow of what has become the largest aviation search and rescue mission ever as more than 25 countries combined their resources in the continued search for Malaysia Airlines MH370, the Boeing 777-200ER that went missing not long after take-off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport bound for Beijing on March 8, 2014. As we closed for press there was no more news on the search for the aircraft and our thoughts and prayers remain for the passengers and crew on Flight MH370, their families and friends and everbody in the aviation community impacted by the incident.

It is too early to say what impact the three days of networking in Kuching will have, but if a conservative one per cent of the 1,400 pre-scheduled meetings results in new services, that will bring more almost 15 new route pairs and a significant boost to origin and destination economies (with meetings arranged through the Extra Meetings System at the event the total number of meetings taking place would have doubled). In fact our own informal discussions with airline and airport delegates during the event suggest that one or two new routes are already really close to being agreed.

We have tried to squeeze three days of business and networking into just three minutes in our special event highlights package below:

As many roads as possible to be re-tarred in Kuching City South ...

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 12:07 PM PDT

KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) will re-tar as many roads under its area of jurisdiction as possible this year.

Kuching City South Mayor Dato James Chan made this call yesterday after the MBKS full council meeting at the council's headquarters here.

"We are asking all the related utilities to clear which road is spoilt and needs fixing, and which road is smooth so we can go and re-tar it, because we have received complaints in the past that the roads in Kuching are not up to standard," Chan told reporters after the council meeting.

He cited the example of Jalan Segamat along Bintawa.

"Jalan Segamat always has holes because the load factor for the road is not suitable for lorries.

"So now we have carved out a new strategy to ensure that when we re-tar the road, there will be a certain amount of gravel to withstand the lorries' weight, or else the road will keep getting damaged," Chan added.

He said there is no fixed period between one re-tarring and the next re-tarring, as it should last a few years.

"Remember that the road's strength is actually for normal saloon motorcars, but as with any city, you have lorries going on the road. This is why the roads get spoilt fast, and it also depends on rain.

"If it keeps raining, potholes will reappear. Sometimes, these are beyond the council, but we are committed to tar roads sprouting potholes," Chan said.

He said MBKS would not be able re-tar protocol roads as they come under the Public Works Department (JKR).

There are currently over 700 km of roads under the council, and the cost of road maintenance in 2013 was RM3 million while this year the council has RM5 million for that.

During the Paradesa Borneo Bike Discovery Tour, he was assigned to transport the participants from Kuching Waterfront to Pangkalan Kampong Nombor 5 along with Marudu Kitli, a second-generation sampan owner plying his trade down the Sarawak River.

For Matthew Smith, one of the participants in the cycling tour from England, the cycling activity was really relaxing as he was able to enjoy the view of the village and the city. He has been in Sarawak for 8 days, and unlike travelling by car, cycling was nice and slow as he was able to stop and take a good look at the sights as well as has the opportunity to take pictures.

Japan pick Kuching as venue for training stint BorneoPost Online ...

KUCHING: The Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre has become a top choice for Japan's national Boy's Under-14 team coach Hayato Sakurai to hold a training camp for his players.

Hayato, who arrived here on Monday with his team of four boys and a trainer, has been training the players since then and the camp ended yesterday.

The boys Naoki Tajima, Kazuma Aoki, Kai Kawano and Taisei, are preparing for the World Junior Team Championship Boys Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying scheduled for Apr 21-26 in New Delhi, India.

They are accompanied by their trainer Tamami Kitamura.

"We chose Kuching as our training camp venue because we like the facilities at SLTA Tennis Centre here. The weather here now is good unlike in Japan which is still cold now.

"Our team is enjoying the training camp here and the people in Kuching are very friendly and hospitable," said Hayato who is team coach and captain.

He was here in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 as team coach and captain for Japanese boy's team for the WJTC Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying competition.

Japan has always finished in the top four in recent years, having finished third in 2009, runners-up in 2011 and 2012, and third last year.

Hayato also liked the environment at SLTA Tennis Centre which is surrounded by trees and greenery.

"You can't find this kind of green environment in Tokyo because it is all concrete buildings in the city," he said.

"While here, our boys were able to play and spar together with your junior players which is good for our boys as they get to play with players of other nationality and culture," Hayato added.

"It is a very good exposure and experience for them," he said.

After the Kuching stint, the Japanese team will return to Japan where they will play in a regional U-14 tournament before undergoing another three-day training camp in Tokyo and flying to India in mid-April.

Meanwhile, SLTA president Dato Patrick Liew said Kuching is becoming popular with coaches and players wanting to come here to train, especially when it is winter in their countries.

"As for Hayato's group, we have a mutual arrangement for him to use our facilities free of charge in return for him to help coach our juniors and also let his players practice together with them, which is a win-win situation for both parties," he said.

Liew said SLTA had gained recognition by successfully organising international tennis tournaments.

"Coaches wishing to bring their players for exposure overseas will look to SLTA to provide the necessary assistance and cooperation.

"Other factors are our favourable weather, good location, facilities and cheap food," said Liew.

He said the Japanese Junior Fed Cup team would also be coming to Kuching early to prepare for the Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying tournament that will be held at SLTA Tennis Centre from May 5-11.
