MyTeksi taxi booking service is now available in Kuching ... Posted: 14 Mar 2014 08:33 AM PDT Popular taxi booking service MyTeksi has finally spread its wings to Kuching, Sarawak. Since the service is rather new in East Malaysia, they are running a beta tester program where you can stand a chance to win an iPhone 5C. All you need to do is place a MyTeksi booking from now until 30th of April. Each successful booking gives you 5 entries while each unsuccessful booking will grant you 1 entry. The service is rather efficient in the Klang Valley especially with its large network of participating drivers. Requesting for a cab is easy thanks to its rather reliable mapping system which accurately identifies your current location for pick up. For greater peace of mind, the app shares the driver details and you can also share your estimated time of arrival with a real time location tracker to your family and friends. Business events helping to spur Kuching's tourism industry ... Posted: 10 Mar 2014 11:54 AM PDT by Adrian Lim, adrianlim@theborneopost.com. Posted on March 11, 2014, Tuesday KUCHING: The city of Kuching has become the centre of commerical and industry in Sarawak with its ability to host major business events. According to Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) managing director Mike Cannon, the ongoing development of more business events held in Kuching as well as other cities in Sarawak will help to promote the tourism industry in the state. "The business events industry is one of the fastest growing segments within the tourism industry. Kuching is at the centre of commerce and industry in Sarawak, Malaysia's largest state, and probably of the whole of Borneo. "It caters to a variety of businesses within industries ranging from handicrafts right up to aluminium smelting. "Having said that, Kuching has found a niche among the education, health, technology, environmental and cultural sectors because of the strong government involvement in these areas," he said during the opening of Routes Asia at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here recently. He added event organisers in those sectors are drawn to Kuching because they knew those sectors are being addressed in a big way by the state government. Cannon pointed out that about 82 per cent of the events promoted by SCB went to Kuching although he noted that some did go to Miri and Sibu. He said " Each city has its own unique features and attractions and the choice ultimately depends on a client's requirements and preferences. "Kuching is simply a more established destination and is able to accommodate large scale events compared to Miri or Sibu," he observed. He noted that Kuching offered event organisers something different and more value-added compared to other cities. "What enhances Kuching's value as a host city even more is that it offers something extra. Customers today are fussier and are looking for something different. "Kuching has been described as fresh and novel by those who have held their events here. The creativity of the many different cultures that live in harmony in Sarawak is also a big attractions," he believed. Cannon further revealed that since featured at the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Asia Pacific and Middle East City ranking in 2010, the latest figure showed the city of Kuching shared the number 38th spot with Colombo, Chennai, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta and Tel Aviv. He noted that Kuching as host to many business events has beaten many of the established second tier cities such as Canberra, Nagoya, Chengdu and Osaka. Going forward, Cannon hoped that Kuching being host to many business events will fare better in terms of ranking in the future as more people come to visit and know what Kuching has to offer for business event buyers. He is confident that Kuching will rise up the ranks as he noted that a significant amount of returning clients have continuously bid for new events to be held here. |
Kuching rider upstage Malaysian champ Shahrin in Bau ... Posted: 11 Mar 2014 11:37 AM PDT by Marshall Tiong. Posted on March 12, 2014, Wednesday KUCHING: Malaysian champion Shahrin Amir literally took the wrong turn at the inaugural Kuching Mountain Bike Series Challenge at Bau last Sunday. Riding for trade team Giant, Shahrin was heavily favoured to win the 50km race. He was quick to break away with teammate Mohd. Shafari and Team Corbusier's Laurel Lauridsen Adrian. Unfortunately, the leading trio would find themselves in a wrong turn at the 8km mark. "We must have covered another seven km before we realized that we had taken the wrong turn," said Shahrin. Glory Chai, riding for series sponsor Giant's Kuching dealer Bicycle Emporium, ended up as the first to cross the finish line to claim the first win of the four-race series. He clocked 2hrs 6mins 59secs to lead the series with 25 points with Shahrin at 20 points and Shafari at 17points. Shahrin was 35 sec back with Shafari a further 33 sec adrift. Laurel finished just 2 sec from his first podium of the season. Shahrin's 2014 season had started with a race at Muar, Johor in Febuary followed by a second race at Baling, Kedah. He was second in Muar, beaten by arch rival Fauzan Ahmad Lufti but bounced back to win in Baling. For the Bau race, he was happy with how his team fared. "I am happy with how I raced and the team performed as expected," said Shahrin. "The race was smoothly organised and the track was great. The course was unique as we went through plantations and villages. If you advertise it more widely in the Peninsular, I think you might get more people to come race here," he added. The women's race was won by Sarawak's SEA Games rider Junaidah Juus with Giant's Laura Avilla Adrian second. Racing on the same 50km course, Junaidah timed 2hrs 30mins 37secs with Laura 24mins 7secs behind. Kelly Chung of the newly-formed Team Sarawak Independent Racers (SiR) was third in 3hrs 8mins 30secs. Laura is recovering from injuries and acknowledged that her preparation for Bau was not ideal. "Actually, my doctor advised me to stop racing but I felt worst when not training so I decided to just continue," said Laura, the elder sister of Corbusier's Laurel. The poor air quality in the Peninsula has also meant that she could not train as much as needed. Corbusier's duo of Mohd. Faiz Matjelan,15, and Haziq Al-fayyedh Evenue Hajar,16, were first and second in the junior division. "They have the ability to be the future of Sarawak cycling, if they keep progressing like this," said Safri Mohammed, Corbusier's team principal. Faiz finished in 2hrs. 40mins 51secs with Haziq just five sec behind and Saxon's Mohd. Adham Arif third some ten mins. off the pace. The masters race went to Azarey Mohamed in 2hrs 19mins 58secs with Saxon Racing's Patrick Siqueen 6mins 4secs behind. Chung Xan Tang was third just a heartbreaking 2secs behind Patrick. The next race of the series will be in May at Singgai. Bau runner-up Shahrin will most likely not be present as he is scheduled to race in Indonesia then. |
