KUCHING:  A total of 25 flights, involving 12 departures and 13 arrivals, were cancelled this morning as the runway of Kuching International Airport (KIA) had to be closed due to the thick haze.

KIA senior manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim said the affected airlines were Air Asia – involving nine departures and 10 arrivals – and Malaysia Airlines – three departures and three arrivals – when the airport ceased operation at 7 am.

The visibility at the airport was understood to be 350 metres. However, flight operation has resumed at 9.10 am.

"Due to the thick haze, our runway was closed at 0700 hours and opened back for flight operations at 0910 hours. We expected some delays in flight movement and will update from time to time," he said in a statement.

Between 6 am and 9 am today, the air quality in Kuching was at an unhealthy level of 114 Air Pollutant Index (API) reading and rising to 117. Samarahan recorded the highest API rating of 132, which decreased to 129 as of 9 am.

The rest of the state recorded moderate air quality level with Kapit the only area with good API rating of between 49-50.
