KUCHING: The Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas) are honoured to be hosting the 29th Asian Inter-city Bowling Championships for the first time at Megalanes Adventure World from November 9-16.

Abas vice president Robert Lu said they have harboured the dream of organising the event since they made their debut in the regional competition as a guest team in Singapore in 2011.

"Our dream has become a reality and we are hoping to make it one of the best organised editions of the championship here next month," Lu said after chairing an organising committee meeting at Red Pin Restaurant last Sunday.

He said a total of 166 bowlers and 25 officials from 14 teams representing the Philippines, South Korea, Brunei, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia have confirmed their participation in the annual meet.

The 14 teams are defending champions Pasay City and Paranaque City (Philippines), Daegu (South Korea), Belait, Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Kowloon City, Hong Kong City, New Territories (Hong Kong), Kuching A, B, C, Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Lu, who is the tournament secretary, said in fact 17 teams had shown interest in competing in the championship but Singapore, Sydney and Guam did not make it eventually.

"The main objective of this championship is to foster friendship among the cities and to promote tourism and Kuching as the 'City of Unity'," he said.

"The bowlers, officials and delegates shall arrive in Kuching on November 8 and they will taken on a city tour the following day to places of tourist interest including the Sarawak Cultural Village and treated to lunch at the fishing village of Buntal and brought for souvenir shopping," added Lu.

Categories to be competed are singles, doubles and team for men, men senior, women and women senior.

Ministry of Social Development permanent secretary Kameri Affandi and Abas president Sunny Si are joint organising chairmen and the technical delegate is Joey Miranda III.

Kuching City won a gold and five bronze medals in the 2012 AIBC championships in Penang. They missed the 2013 edition held in Guam due to lack of funds.

Last year, they brought home two silvers and five bronzes from San Juan, Philippines.
