Cyclists dominate 2nd <b>Kuching</b> Car Free Morning – BorneoPost <b>...</b>

KUCHING: Around 300 cyclists participated in the second edition of The Kuching Car Free Morning (KCFM) yesterday.

The environmental community event was organised by AsiaTourismAlliance.com (ATA) which had co-organised the Kuala Lumpur Car Free Morning.

BodyJam instructors from Level Up Fitness led the warm-up before participants were flagged off in front of Sarawak Plaza by ATA president and chief executive officer Kho Sze Min, ATA executive vice chairman and chief operating officer Jamilah Shukri and captain of Kuching Cops Cycling Club ASP Ricky Poh.

Kho was encouraged by the online sign ups.

"It tells us that people are constantly supportive towards achieving a greener city, and concern about their fitness level," he said.

The first Kuching Car Free Morning saw up to 1,000 participants taking part.

The plan is to hold the event every second Sunday of the month, jointly organised with local councils and strategic partners in the hope of turning it into an iconic green tourism product.

ATA is constantly exploring new activities including morning mass fitness at the Kuching Waterfront in addition to the normal cycling, jogging, walking and roller blading to encourage youths, urban dwellers and tourists to keep a healthy lifestyle.

KCFM aims at receding carbon emission to 40 percent by 2020.

Yesterday's event saw the participation of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Kuching City North Commission (DBKU), Tourism Ministry Sarawak and Royal Malaysia Police as event partners.

Playing supporting roles were Tourism Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak Tourism Board, Sarawak Cycling Association. The official magazine was Cycling Malaysia and Running Malaysia.

The event was sponsored by Level Up Fitness, Polygon, Milo and Waters.

<b>Kuching</b> North sees RM25.4m paid up in assessment rates <b>...</b>

KUCHING: Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) has collected 65 per cent of assessment rates in the first nine months of the year.

According to DBKU Mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Julai, the collection totalled about RM25.4 million, although the target for the whole of 2014 is RM39 million.

"We are currently satisfied with the amount collected as we have another three months to reach the target," said Wahap who was speaking at the 'Program Bersama Komuniti' at Kampung Salak yesterday.

The programme saw the setting up of a mobile assessment rate payment counter, demonstration on home composting and a question-and-answer (Q&A) session with residents of the village.

Also present were DBKU director Dr Saadiah Abdul Samat and the village chief Wahid Mat.
