KUCHING: Two local establishments – The Dance Academy (Kuching) and Jackie Inspirations – have shown to the world that 'Kuching Boleh' when they were recognised for their achievements.

The Dance Academy (Kuching), which was among the teams representing Malaysia in the recently concluded 16th Asia Pacific Dance Competition in Singapore, emerged as the overall bronze winner in the competition.

According to its artistic director January Chan, the dance academy sent 45 dancers to participate in four categories – under 15 years old, open, trio, open contemporary and ballet under 15 years old.

"The major contributor to our bronze win was the ballet under 15 years old category themed 'White Crane Story; Caring Hearts, Touching Lives' which was participated by 25 dancers," she told reporters after a joint courtesy call by The Dance Academy (Kuching) and Jackie Inspirations on Kuching City South mayor Datuk James Chan at the latter's office here yesterday.

The Dance Academy (Kuching) delegation was led by its principal Mary Chan while Jackie Inspirations was led by its proprietor Jackie Tan.

January noted that there were all together over 80 programmes contested in the competition, participated by over 1,000 participants from 10 Asia Pacific countries.

Mary, meanwhile, said her dance academy will be organising an international dance festival in Kuching next year, which she expected to be held in conjunction with Kuching Festival.

Meanwhile, Tan said her team, in partnership with Boulevard Enterprise (Kuching) Sdn Bhd, was proud to make Kuching the first city in Malaysia to enter The Malaysia Book of Records for the biggest Christmas-themed landscape made of balloons.

The four-metre by 16-metre landscape was exhibited at Boulevard Shopping Mall here last year.

"We would like to make Kuching proud. When we brought the (The Malaysia Book of Records) judges to Kuching, they were very surprised and happy to see the landscape because nobody has created this record before."

Besides that, Tan said her team was the only team from Malaysia to participate in the Guinness World Records twice, with the last being held in Hefei, China where they created a horse made of balloons.

In lauding the efforts made by The Dance Academy (Kuching) and Jackie Inspirations for creating a name for the state, the mayor said the recognition had indirectly helped to promote not only the state but also Kuching to the world.

"Maybe this will help to create interest for more tourists to visit Sarawak and also Kuching. This is what I, as a mayor, want to promote. We must help the government (to promote tourism in Sarawak). We cannot just leave it to the government."

Chan also called on city folks to work together to promote Kuching as a tourist destination and make the city a better place for all.
