Hope Place Kuching assists senior citizen and his disabled daughter Posted: 04 Jan 2014 09:48 AM PST KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching has extended a helping hand to Chin Nam Fook, 72, and his disabled daughter Oi Lee. Chin, who relies on his cane to walk, still takes care of his disabled daughter who is now age 38. Being weak due to his age, he is unable to perform basic household chores. The house was dirty and unkempt when Hope Place founder, Kelvin Wan, visited with basic food items donated by the public. In a press statement issued by Hope Place yesterday, Chin said he could only afford to cook rice for a week at a time. The rice cooker emitted a pungent odour that could be smelt from seven feet away. The white tiles had also turned black with neglect. Chin's daughter Oi Lee was born disabled and never gained the capability to walk or talk. At 20, she suffered from a stroke which paralysed her. She has been bedridden for the past 18 years. The bed is a simple wooden one without a mattress and Oi Lee rested on it with a wooden pillow. She suffers from bed sore due to this. It is located in the bathroom so that Chin can clean up everything more conveniently. Oi Lee's blouse has not been changed for the past six months. Chin and daughter live by themselves in a low-cost housing estate. They rely on government's welfare cheque of RM300 a month. Kind neighbours paid for their bills. Hope Place volunteers had also helped to clean up the house to make it more comfortable. The elderly and disabled are the primary focus of Hope Place's food subsidy effort and care. It appreciates and relies on the community's continual support to continue transporting food rations and other basic necessities to all the needy under their care. For more information on how to help, Hope Place can be reached at 013-5672775 from 8.30am to 12.30pm from Mondays to Fridays.
