KUCHING: The joint launch of Boulevard Group of Companies'four new establishments – Imperial Hotel Kuching, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Lexus Kuching and Toyota 3S Centre – will strengthen the group's presence in Kuching.

During the opening ceremony, Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive chairman, James Ling Lu Kiong affirmed that the launch of its new four-star hotel targeted at business travellers was timely as Sarawak celebrates Visit Sarawak Year 2014 and Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The hotel's strategic location between the airport and the central business district (CBD) will certainly be an advantage to both business and leisure travellers, he added.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching also has much to offer in the form of meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (MICE) facilities," he said during the launching ceremony yesterday.

The event was graced by the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Adenan Satem and his wife as well as Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu Numpang.

Also present were Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive director Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho, Boulevard Jaya Sdn Bhd general manager Heu Nging Ching, Boulevard Group of Companies directors Tan Sri Lau Hieng Wui and Dato' Sri Law Kiu Kiong, UMW Toyota president Datuk Ismet Suki and other honoured guests.

"Kuching has really been transformed into a well-known MICE destination when our state government under the vision of our former Chief Minister, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud spearheaded the set up and established the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) in 2006 and the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in 2009 to tap into this vast potential MICE market," he highlighted.

The number of international conferences and conventions held in Kuching over the last few years, the latest being the Asean Tourism Forum 2014 in January and Routes Asia 2014 in March earlier this year were testimony to the enormous success of our state government's vision and efforts.

Imperial Hotel Kuching aims to tap into this market by offering comprehensive MICE facilities including two ballrooms, nine multi-functional meeting rooms, extensive pre function foyer, VIP lounges and a covered outdoor terrace to suit conferences and events of different sizes and preferences.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching's extensive conference and meeting facilities with a total floor area of 5,856 square metres equipped with the latest technological audio video equipment will most definitely support the state government's objective to make the city of Kuching and Sarawak the destination of choice not only for tourism but also for international conventions and events," James affirmed.

In addition, Ling acknowledged that the evolution of today's business world has created the need for a high level of technological solutions and supports to both business and leisure travellers on the go.

On that note, Imperial Hotel Kuching takes great pride at being the first hotel in Sarawak to subscribe to the Hospitality Entertainment Solution, the latest hassle free offering from Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) with the latest ICT and entertainment package comprising of In-Building Broadband Solution (IBS), TM's IPTV service – Hypp TV and powered by TM's high speed broadband (HSBB) network connectivity.

"It is an honour for our hotel to work in partnership with Telekom Malaysia, the largest integrated solutions provider in Malaysia to extend our discerning guests with good WIFI connectivity, be it for entertainment or work related, a weather proof uninterrupted access of internet and good quality HyppTV entertainment and news channels," he said.

Looking at Boulevard Shopping Mall's expansion, James observed that retail offerings have expanded to more than 230 offerings with a good mix.

"Furthermore, three floors of link corridor are connected with this addition to the Phase 1 Mall to give shoppers a more comforting and convenient accessibility.

"After this extra phase of addition, the mall has finally being transformed and fully completed making it the largest on stop lifestyle mall in Sarawak with 1.7 million square foot of retail space," he added.

KUCHING: SM Sains Kuching (SainsKu) created history when their girls team were crowned the national champions of the 41st Fully Residential Boarding Schools Basketball Championship at SM Sains Sultan Mahmud in Kuala Terengganu from May 22-27.

They beat SM Sains Pasir Puteh, Kelantan 47-40 in the final.

Despite trailing their opponents several times in the match, SainsKu showed great resolve and fighting spirit to reduce the points gap and eventually overtook SM Sains Sultan Mahmud to win by seven points in the final three minutes.

In commenting on the team's achievement, SM Sains Kuching senior assistant (co-curriculum) Adzuddin Mantrang, who is also the team contingent leader, praised the girls for their never-say-die attitude, commitment and strong fighting spirit.

"They played with full determination and discipline and after so many years of trying, they have managed to win the championship finishing as runners-up last year," he said.

Ten teams including Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Kedah, Perak and Sarawak, who are champions and runners-up of Northern, Eastern, Central and Western Zones competitions, took part in the championship.

In the national championship, SainsKu beat SM Sains Faris Petra of Kelantan 31-16, SBPI Selandar of Melaka 47-30, Sekolah Seri Puteri of Kuala Lumpur 47-40 and SM Sains Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang 31-16 in the group matches.

They defeated SM Agama Persekutuan Labu, Negeri Sembilan 47-25 in the semi-finals to set up the final clash with SM Sains Sultan Mahmud.

"We succeeded in achieving our target of becoming champions to commemorate with our school's 20th anniversary this year.

"What made the victory more sweet is that our player Jila Antonia won the best player award," said Adzuddin who added that the title was indeed a fitting farewell gift to Philip Ho Soon Huang who will be retiring this year.

Adzuddin said Ho was one of the teachers who had contributed a lot to the school in its sports including the development of basketball.

"We would like to thank all parties who have contributed to our success. They include our school principal Salbiah Seman, school management, teachers, support staff, students, former students and the Parent Teacher Association.

Thanks also goes to the two coaches Claudine Kok Hui Yiin and Michael Chan who have spent so much of their time, energy and money to ensure this success."

Adzuddin said for the first time in 1976, the Toh Puan Datin Hajah Siti Zainab trophy made its way across the South China Sea to the shores of the Borneo Island.

Before this, the boys team from SM Sains Kuching also won the Tun Dato' (Dr) Haji Hamdan Sheikh Tahir trophy for two consecutive years in 2009 and 2010.

Kuching centre marks Lexus' first foray into East Malaysia ...

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 09:44 AM PDT

KUCHING: The opening of Lexus Kuching 3S centre, the first outlet in East Malaysia, along with a new Toyota 3S centre, is in line with expectations of a substantial increase in sales of vehicles.

During the opening ceremony, UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ismet Suki says with the strong economic growth and developed infrastructure in Sarawak, UMW foresees a substantial increase in vehicle sales.

"We will continue to invest further in network expansion to ensure our customers' demand and satisfaction will continue to be fulfilled," Ismet projected.

He pointed out that UMW Toyota Motor has invested more than RM100 million to establish the extensive Toyota network.

"This will not stop here as we have plans to upgrade our facilities to cater to the needs and requirements of our customers in Sarawak," he added.

UMW Toyota has so far established nine sales and aftersales outlets including dealers throughout Sarawak together with a Regional Part Distribution Center.

Three of the outlets are in Kuching alone, and one is operated by Boulevard Jaya Sdn Bhd (Boulevard Jaya) which just recently acquired its 3S status. On a side note, Ismet pointed out that UMW Toyota Motor closed last year, with a market share of slightly over 14 per cent and continued their leadership in the non-national segment for the 24th consecutive year.

"We plan to achieve more than 100,000 units for Toyota and Lexus vehicles this year. In Sarawak alone, we sold more than 12,200 units of which Hilux continues to be the most popular model with more than 50 per cent market share," he said.

On Boulevard Jaya, Ismet noted this has been one of their most successful dealerships in the country and that they have been highly supportive of all UMW Toyota initiatives.

"It is these qualities that make Boulevard Jaya our chosen dealer to operate the first Lexus outlet right here in Kuching, Sarawak and the first in East Malaysia," he explained.

With the opening of the first Lexus 3S centre in East Malaysia, not only do new Lexus owners get to appreciate the finer aspect of Lexus ownership, but it creates more options for another luxury brand in the luxury car segment in Sarawak.

"Our goal is to present the Lexus hospitality which fuses Asian warmth and thoughtfulness with the quality, standards and dynamism of the West," he explained.

The current stable of Lexus cars includes the Lexus IS, ES, GS, LS and RX, all of which will be made available at this very dealership.
